…as police continue probe; one still at large

(Kaieteur News) – Two more men have been remanded to prison as the Guyana Police Force (GPF) continues its investigation into the discovery of 10 AK-47 rifles.

In a statement issued on Monday, police confirmed that legal advice had been sought and received regarding the way forward in the matter.

The men, 33-year-old Antonio Alonzo Lawrie of Farm Village, East Bank Demerara, and 21-year-old Gregory Persaud, also of Farm Village, were both charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.

Acting on the advice of the police legal adviser, Persaud was additionally charged with possession of firearms without a licence, contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05.

Persaud, a wash bay attendant, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to the firearm-related charge. He was granted $400,000 bail and ordered to report to the police every Friday. The matter was adjourned to July 3, 2026.

Later that day, Lawrie and Persaud appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weever at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, where the conspiracy charge, laid under Section 33 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, was read to them.

Both men pleaded not guilty. However, Magistrate Weever denied bail and remanded them to prison until their next court appearance on July 29, 2026.

The pair surrendered to police on Friday in the company of their attorney, days after investigators issued a wanted bulletin for them and another suspect, Ryan Singh, known as “Satan,” of Parika, East Bank Essequibo. Singh remains at large.

Their alleged associate, 33-year-old Steven Rajah, has already been remanded to prison. Rajah appeared virtually before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on May 28, 2026. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court on June 15, 2026.

Rajah, of Goed Fortuin Village, West Bank Demerara, was the first suspect arrested following the discovery of the 10 AK-47 rifles at No. 11 Village, East Coast Berbice, on May 22.

According to police reports, Rajah was intercepted during a stop-and-search operation conducted by ranks stationed at the Berbice River Bridge Access Road. However, he allegedly fled the scene by driving away. He was subsequently apprehended at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, and taken into custody.
