Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh de Christmas breeze start to blow early dis year. But it ain’t de smell of ham and sorrel in de air. It smelling like gunpowder and oil. Heavy oil.
Yuh remember earlier this year when Uncle Sam dispatch he armada to the Caribbean Sea? Dem talk ’bout “criminal gangs” and “narco-terrorists.” Dem send warship and sanction and just de odder day dem impose naval blockade and seize an oil tanker after blowing up some boats dem claim transporting drugs.
We watch and we whisper, “Somethin’ nah right.” True, dem place have problem, but de hammer Uncle Sam using too big for de nail dem seh dey hitting. And all de time dem claiming was drugs and criminal gangs dem after.
Now, de mask slip clean off. Dem boys in de White House stop pretending. Is all ’bout oil. Pure and simple.
Chavez did announce de nationalization of de oil fields years ago. He tell de American companies to take a hike. Now, we hearing the real tune: dey must get back “their assets.” De oil assets. Overnight, de story change from “fighting crime” to “restoring democracy” and “protecting American interests.” Interests that come in a barrel and sell for USD.
And de language! Dem not even hiding it good. High-ranking officials on de news, straight face, telling de world dat “all options are on the table.” In de polite world of diplomacy, dat is one fancy way of saying “war is an option.” Dem putting de pieces on de board right at we western doorstep.
So here we is. Time for peace and goodwill. But instead of wondering if we get a new shirt for Christmas, we have to wonder if we will hear fighter jets instead. Instead of church bells, air raid sirens? Is dat de new Christmas morning chorus dem planning for we?
We cyaan enjoy no sponge cake if yuh eating it in a shelter. No Grand Market if de sky lighting up with bombs instead of fireworks. Dem boys playing a dangerous game with big stakes, and we, right next door, holding de losing ticket if it go wrong.
If de Americans start bombing, Guyana can become a land flooded with refugees, running from war and running from hardships.
Dis Christmas, pray for peace like yuh never pray before. Not just for we souls, but for we very backyard. Because right now, de greatest gift we could get is no news. Just peace.
Talk half. Leff half.
