De orange gan turn sour

(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh de government get one big, bright idea these days—turn Berbice into de “orange economy powerhouse.” Yes bai, orange! Not citrus, not pumpkin, not even de colour of de traffic cone by Canje bridge. Is creativity and culture dem talking ’bout. And dem boys seh if is culture dem want, dem better start by finding some venues for hosting cultural events.
Because right now, Region Six ain’t gat culture economy. It gat culture shock.
Dem boys tek a drive round Berbice looking fuh dis big orange boom. First stop: sports. Well, is only one place dat looking promising is de Albion Sports Ground. And even that look like it trying it best but still need plenty company. All de other cricket grounds? Dem boys seh dem could qualify fuh UNESCO heritage status— “Ancient Sites of Abandonment and Wild Bush.” Not even a regional match can play deh unless you bring your own grass, lights, and boundary rope.
And Albion itself still waiting long long for de kinda support facilities that make a ground into a venue and a venue into an industry. Deh gat a nice playing field but de stands look like it belong to de 18th century. And don’t talk about de washroom facilities and dressing rooms fuh de teams. Not ready yet!
But government seh not to worry—new stadium coming at Palmyra, Burnham Park getting fix. Dem boys seh that nice, but a stadium alone can’t mek nobody creative. Yuh can’t dish out talent like school uniform coupon.
So what happen to de arts? Try finding a proper indoor spot in Berbice to host a play, a dance showcase, or even an indoor concert. You got a better chance finding a ticket to the next space shuttle launch.
Deh could not recently even find a place in Berbice fuh host de Berbice Development Summit. Dem host it in Georgetown. Outdoor concert? Sure—set it up. But try finding hotel rooms for everybody who come from outta de Region. Dem boys seh is like trying to find snow cone man during rainy season—plenty demand, lil supply.
And dem youth wid real talent—musical, dance, drama? What programme de government set up fuh train, mentor, and grow dem? Dem boys seh is easier to find a mango in December.
So de big orange ambition sound sweet, but until dem build de spaces, fix de grounds, train de youth, and develop de whole ecosystem, Berbice orange economy gon stay just that—one bright idea looking for somewhere to live.
