Hitting social media several months ago, an open call came from the Commonwealth Foundation to participate in a project called the Commonwealth Quilt.
The appeal invited artists from Commonwealth countries to apply to have their work included in a giant tapestry to be displayed in Antigua and Barbuda at the Commonwealth People’s Forum in November 2026. Painters, writers, photographers, and poets were all encouraged to work with the theme “a common thread.”
The response was mighty. 778 written, 392 images, 76 audio and 77 video submissions came from all over the world. The organisers digitally crafted this into a quilt of 1,323 creative responses.
Of these, 7 were from Grenada.
Representing writing, Jessica Walker-Franklyn with I’m Learning and Kamille John with Tapestry of Tenacity. Photography was displayed by Kendall James with Golden Watchtower and Mandesa Crevelle with The Flower of Resilience. Paintings included are Lisa Herrera with See Me, Susan Mains’ Rebeka’s Red Thread and Suelin Low Chew Tung with The Island Bagatelle Reparations Conversation.
The quilt is available to see online at CommonwealthFoundation.com.
Quite often the lament of artists in Grenada is that there are no opportunities for artists. The Commonwealth Quilt has in a small way proven this wrong.
Opportunities are there for the making.
