The Grenada Athletics Association (GAA) has officially announced a powerhouse men’s 4 x 400m relay contingent to represent the tri-island state at the highly anticipated 2026 Barbados Grand Prix scheduled for Saturday, 4 July.
The selected 4-man pool comprises standout quarter-milers making waves on the local and US junior collegiate scenes: Joshem Sylvester (45.61s this season), Devonni Ferguson (45.77s this season), Michael Francois (45.69s season’s best), and Shaquane Toussaint (46.00s season’s best). Accompanying the squad to Bridgetown is veteran track administrator Wayne McSween, who will serve in the crucial dual capacity of Head Coach and Team Manager.
This quartet last ran together at the 2026 Whitsuntide Games in Grenada in May, clocking an impressive time of 3:06.56. Since that performance, momentum has built rapidly across the nation for this unit to receive more competitive opportunities together. Local track pundits are confident that with 3 of the four runners having dipped under the 46-second barrier individually this season, this group poses a legitimate threat to the long-standing national senior 4 x 400m record of 3:04.27, established by Rondell Bartholomew, Joel Redhead, Junior Charles, and Kirani James.
Expectations are understandably high for this group following Grenada’s showing at the inaugural edition of the meet last year, where the men’s 4 x 100m relay team shattered the national record with a blistering time of 39.16 seconds. This year, the local spotlight and tactical focus shift entirely to the longer sprint.
Alongside the core relay group, the Barbados Grand Prix organisers have extended exclusive, flagship individual invitations to 3 marquee Grenadian track stars to contest their signature disciplines.
Former world champion and iconic Olympic gold medalist Kirani James headlines the individual invitations in his classic 400m event. He is joined by Ohio State standout Nazzio John, the current dual-national senior record holder in the 100m and 200m, who will line up in the individual 100m.
Rounding out the individual invitations is Shaquane Toussaint, who will pull double duty by contesting the individual 200m sprint in addition to his anchor responsibilities on the 4 x 400m relay squad.
With a balanced blend of decorated global superstars and sharp, in-form relay specialists, Grenada is well-positioned for a highly competitive showing in Barbados.
