On 13 January, His Majesty’s Prisons (HMP) proudly welcomed its newest prison officers to the service with the historic graduation of Course 1 of 2025, marking a transformative moment in the evolution of Grenada’s correctional services.
In a powerful and inspiring address, the Commissioner of Prisons commended the extraordinary achievements of the 55 graduating officers — the largest cohort in HMP’s history — who have now successfully earned Correctional Custodial Security NVQ Level 2 certification, a first for the institution.
Commissioner of Prisons Anthony Rogers expressed gratitude for the collective effort that made the training programme a success, specifically recognising class teachers, pt instructors, principal officers, training officers, drill instructors, the Special Services Unit (SSU) and the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) Band.
He emphasised the gravity and honour of their calling,
“As prison officers, above all else, you must be men of integrity, discipline and service — standing ready to serve your country with honour.”
Commissioner Rogers also extended profound gratitude to the Hon. Prime Minister and Minister for National Security, and to the Government of Grenada, for their unwavering support and commitment to strengthening the nation’s correctional and rehabilitative framework. He underscored that the investment in training and professional certification directly enhances the Prison Service’s dual mandate of security and rehabilitation.
Reflecting on the rigorous journey endured by the recruits, Commissioner of Police Randy Connaught acknowledged the demanding nature of the training, particularly the intense SSU phase that tested each officer’s discipline, endurance and character. From pre‑dawn physical conditioning and weapons handling to riot control, tactical readiness and academic studies, recruits faced challenges that — he emphasised — were designed not only to shape them into exemplary officers and men of service.
The recruits were praised for their resilience, unity and determination — a sentiment that captured the emotional triumph shared by the graduates upon successfully completing the most gruelling stage of their training.
Prime Minister and Minister for National Security congratulated the new recruits on their achievements, reaffirming that they now join the ranks of officers entrusted with upholding the highest standards of professionalism and humanity within Grenada’s correctional system.
