Men appear in court for rape of SGU students

With the help of camera footage and its own Night ambush patrol squad, the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) was able to apprehend the three suspects in the case involving the rape of two female students of St George’s University (SGU) on Saturday night.

According to a well-placed source, the hardest thing for the lawmen was to find the exact location where the trio were hiding out and they were eventually caught sleeping in the same house in which they were living in Mont Toute.

He said it was very diligent work by the police both day and night with little or no rest to apprehend the suspects.

“From Day One the police had an idea who the individuals were – they always had their eyes on the suspects” he told THE NEW TODAY.

“It was a whole day and night search. The men were out from morning searching, they eat something, back again to search, break again, get a little refreshment and back again way after midnight until we catch them,” he said.

The suspects were identified as 26 year old Chevon Stephen of Lowther’s Lane, St. George, and Jassim Theobalds, 27 years old, and 25-year old Jeremy Theobalds who are both from Mont Toute, St. George.

The trio appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Francine Foster Thursday to face charges of Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Ammunition, Possession of a Firearm with Intent, Kidnapping, Housebreaking and Stealing.

The police also slapped additional charges on them – two (2) counts of Rape of the SGU students, two (2) counts of Robbery with Violence, two (2) counts of Indecent Assault and two (2) counts of Forcible Detaining of a Person to have Sexual Intercourse.

Additional charges of Possession of Firearm, Possession of Ammunition, Possession of Firearm with Intent, Housebreaking and Stealing and Attempted Robbery have also been laid against Jassim Theobalds.

The Theobalds are being represented by attorney-at-law Jerry Edwin while his colleague Arley Gill has been retained by Stephen.

A police insider indicated that the suspects were in an area in Mont Toute overlooking South St George Police Station and apparently moving from one location to another in order to evade the police search party.

However, he said the police with the element of surprise was able to catch the suspects as they were fast asleep in the house.

He spoke of the lawmen looking at Camera footage to determine which direction the men came from to put down the criminal activities in Lance Aux Epines including rape.

He described one of the suspects as an individual who was recently released from the Richmond Hill prison.

“He is a notorious criminal,” said the police insider, who added that the individual graduated into committing offences” as a result of his sojourn at prison to mingle with more dangerous inmates.

The suspect Chevon Stephen was out of prison on bail in connection with a murder in Saigon in the south of the island a few years ago.

A lawyer was able to secure his freedom as he was under-aged at the time of the crime.

The murder involved an individual who was chopped to death by several attackers who were seeking revenge because he had chopped one of their colleagues.

The victim was cornered in a shop and hacked to death by his attackers.

THE NEW TODAY understands that Attorney Edwin did not approach the Chief Magistrate for bail because of the amount of criminal charges laid on the men who will be held on Remand at the prison until their next court date on February 17, 2026 for the full hearing of the Preliminary Inquiry.

The matter is expected to proceed on the basis of a Paper Trial in order to get the case fast-tracked to the high court for hearing before a judge and jury.
