A Learn to Swim programme for special education students is not just about teaching strokes — it’s about unlocking potential, ensuring safety, and nurturing joy. It’s an investment in dignity, inclusion, and lifelong empowerment.
Those were the words of Rotary Club of Grenada President Julia Lawrence as she officially launched the Rotary Club of Grenada’s Learn to Swim Programme for the Grenada School for Special Education at the Limes, Grand Anse, on Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
The school holds a special connection to Rotary, having been founded in 1976 through the collaboration of the Rotary Club of Grenada and the Rotary Clubs of Scarborough and Toronto.
This new initiative underscores Rotary’s enduring commitment to service and making a difference — especially in the lives of those who are often overlooked.
The Rotary Club of Grenada has partnered with Get Grenada Swimming, an organisation that has taught over 10,000 people to swim between 2017 and 2022. Together, they aim to transform lives, embodying Rotary International’s 2025–2026 theme, “Unite for Good.”
Swim classes will commence on Friday, 10 October and continue every Friday thereafter. Students will be trained in groups of 10–12 over eight-week sessions for the next 2 years. The goal is to ensure that all 72 students become comfortable and confident in the water. Teachers at the school will also receive training to ensure the programme’s sustainability.
A Learn to Swim programme for children in special education extends far beyond recreation. It is a transformative initiative that enhances every aspect of a child’s development. Among its many benefits, it:
- Promotes water safety
- Enhances physical development
- Supports cognitive and behavioural growth
- Fosters social skills and inclusion
- Promotes emotional and psychological well-being
- Provides tailored learning opportunities
This project is one of several initiatives the Rotary Club of Grenada has planned for the school this Rotary year, including student health checks, the annual Christmas party, and a movie day. The Club also continues to support the ongoing expansion of the school’s facilities.
The Rotary Club of Grenada expresses sincere appreciation to all individuals and organisations that have contributed — or pledged to contribute — to these initiatives. The club encourages the public to continue supporting its mission to create lasting, positive change in the community.
