The Ministry of Health is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, in St George’s, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was officially signed between the Government of Grenada and the China-based HE Vision Group to introduce a world-class eye health programme to the nation.
This groundbreaking initiative sets Grenada on a pathway to become the first country in the Eastern Caribbean to implement such a comprehensive model for eye health screening, treatment, and professional training.
The programme will include:
- National Eye Health Screening Programme covering school-aged children and adults over 40, with a focus on early detection of myopia, cataracts, and chronic eye diseases
- AI-powered diagnostics and robotics-assisted technology to ensure fast, accurate screenings and treatment, supported by advanced data systems to build Grenada’s first national eye health database
- Optometric Technology Training Programme and the establishment of a Vocational Training Centre, providing in-person training at the highest international level to address the shortage of eye care professionals
During Wednesday’s ceremony, Health Minister the Hon. Philip Telesford welcomed the cooperation as an important opportunity to strengthen Grenada’s health system and deliver practical, lasting benefits for the Grenadian people. This initiative will improve access to eye care, cutting-edge treatment options, and the development of sustainable local expertise, the minister explained.
This collaboration was first initiated by Grenada’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, H E Ian Marshall, who actively engaged his Chinese counterparts and encouraged them to visit Grenada and bring this programme to the Spice Isle. His efforts have paved the way for a meaningful partnership that not only strengthens Grenada–China relations but also advances Grenada’s leadership in public health innovation across the region.
