In a significant step toward enhancing Grenada’s healthcare system, officials from the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, 26 August, met with the newly installed US Principal Officer Cindy Diouf, hospital administrators, and 2 US military doctors based in Guyana.

The meeting focused on deepening bilateral cooperation, exploring opportunities for training, and enhancing medical infrastructure across the tri-island state.

The Principal Officer expressed keen interest in understanding Grenada’s public healthcare landscape and emphasised the US commitment to supporting regional health initiatives. Discussions included potential collaboration on a containerised clinic in Carriacou and expanded training programmes for local medical personnel.

Key stakeholders such as NaDMA, the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF), and St George’s University (SGU) were also highlighted as vital partners in humanitarian assistance and disaster management efforts. The meeting underscored the importance of building resilient systems through shared expertise and resources.

Director of Hospital Services Nurse Hannah St Paul provided an overview of Grenada’s hospital networks, which include:

• General Hospital (St George’s)
• Princess Alice Hospital (St Andrew)
• Princess Royal Hospital (Carriacou)
• Mt Gay Hospital (Psychiatric Unit)

“While our healthcare system faces real challenges, we are committed to transformation through collaboration,” said the Director of Hospital Services. “Partnerships like these are essential to building capacity, improving patient care, and creating a more resilient health infrastructure for all Grenadians.”

The meeting also explored future opportunities which could bring advanced medical capabilities to Grenada. Specific areas identified for support include laparoscopy, arthroscopy, and orthopaedic equipment upgrades. Inventory management and storage limitations were also noted as areas needing improvement.

Representing the US Embassy in Guyana, Captain Andrew Shue and Staff Sergeant Ricardo Castaneda who shared insights on regional medical cooperation and expressed readiness to assist in capacity-building efforts.

This collaborative engagement marks a promising chapter in Grenada’s pursuit of a more robust and sustainable healthcare system, driven by innovation, partnership, and shared commitment to public well-being.
