Delcy Rodriguez lands at MBIA

Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez arrived in Grenada on Thursday for her first foreign visit since assuming power in January, replacing Nicolas Maduro who was captured by the U.S military and taken away to New York with his wife to face drug-running charges.

Rodriguez was greeted on arrival at the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) by the island’s Foreign Affairs minister Joseph Andall after disembarking her plane.

St George’s was the first stop by Rodriquez who replaced Maduro who was snatched by U.S in January and accused of trafficking in drugs, corruption and controlling a cartel engaged in the billion-dollar cocaine trade.

About half-an-hour after arriving in Grenada, the female Venezuelan leader paid a Courtesy Call on Governor-General Dame Cecile La Grenade at her Residence close to the airport.

Rodriquez was also taken to the Houses of Parliament at Mt Wheldale, overlooking the capital city of St George to meet with the Ministers of the Grenada Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.

The Grenadian leader sees the visit as “marking an important moment of engagement and dialogue” between the two countries.

“Today’s visit provided an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic ties, explore areas of mutual interest, and continue fostering partnerships that support development and co-operation,” the office of the Prime Minister of Grenada said in a brief statement.

The two sides are expected to issue a joint communiqué on the engagement between Grenada and Venezuela.

Roderiquez’s visit is coming against the backdrop of a warning from Grenada’s Dickon Mitchell that the recent developments in Caracas including the demise of Maduro “have failed to advance peace or resolve disputes, instead pushing the region toward greater instability.”

PM Mitchell warned that the events surrounding Maduro had not narrowed differences between Caracas and Washington and underscored the need for diplomacy.

“We again reiterate our position that diplomacy, dialogue, negotiation, and compromise are the only means of achieving any sustainable, long-term resolution to differences,” Mitchell said.

The Prime Minister, who is also an attorney, stressed that all parties must respect international norms, the rules of international engagement, and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries across the Western Hemisphere and the Americas.

“That is the only way we will make progress…whenever differences arise between certain countries or amongst countries,” he added.

PM Dickon Mitchell declined to directly respond to Washington’s statement that it intends to “run” Venezuela following the removal of President Nicolás Maduro. Instead, he questioned the premise of the comment.

“I don’t think I have a response to that. The only way a country can run another country, let me put it this way, a country runs its own country, and the only way you can run another country is if that territory belongs to that country or is a colony of that country,” he said.

The Grenadian leader suggested the question should instead be directed to U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration.
