The World Council of Cretans (WCC) has revealed the first details of the 7th World Convention of Cretans to take place this July.
The Convention, held every three years, will be held form 23-26 July in Chania at the facilities of the Orthodox Academy of Crete, with approximately 150 delegates from around the world expected to participate.
The WCC confirmed some initial details into the Convention, including its overall theme ‘Crete and the Cretans of Today and Tomorrow’, while also revealing its logo.
The WCC noted in their press release that the sun and sea in the logo symbolise optimism, creativity, progress, and the power of collaboration, while the Cretan wild goat (Kri-Kri) reflects both the host region of the Convention and the unique natural, historical, and cultural identity of Crete.
Each day of the convention will have a separate thematic pillar: Diaspora, Economy, and Development (23 July), Climate Crisis and the Environment (24 July), Education and Culture (25 July), Inclusion, Social Responsibility, and Volunteerism (26 July).
The Convention program will feature eight keynote speakers and over 60 distinguished presenters and panellists.
Participants will include academics, researchers, entrepreneurs, representatives of institutional bodies, organisational leaders, and accomplished professionals with proven expertise and significant contributions in their respective fields, coming from Crete, Greece, and the global Diaspora.
Speakers will participate in thematic panels and specialised discussions, presenting not only the challenges facing Crete but also concrete proposals, best practices, and actionable solutions.
The organisers confirmed all Convention sessions will be open to the public.
Alongside the Convention proceedings, interactive workshops and educational seminars will be held daily, specifically designed for young members of the Cretan Diaspora.
Pre-Convention events will begin on Tuesday 21 July in collaboration with the Municipality of Chania and local cultural organizations.
Dance groups from Crete and the Diaspora will participate in a grand cultural parade through the historic Venetian Harbor of Chania, marking the beginning of the festivities in a vibrant and celebratory manner.
Throughout Convention Week, the flags of the World Council of Cretans will fly proudly over the historic Firka Fortress.
In addition, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in daily cultural, social, and recreational events that will showcase the renowned hospitality, culture, and traditions of Crete.
