Water bills in Athens are expected to increase soon as managing company EYDAP tabled a relevant proposal to the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAEYS) with relatively immediate implementation, within 2026.
Public company EYDAP that is funded with tax payers money justifies the increases with the problem of the water scarcity and the need for infrastructure improvement.
The scenario is open for increases that will not affect household consumption, however, the monthly fixed fee for water will increase from 1 to 2 euros, while the introduction of a fixed sewage fee -1 euro per month- is also being considered, which will increase the monthly fixed cost to 3 euros.
At the same time, EYDAP proposes to exempt from the fixed water and sewage fees beneficiaries of social tariffs who are subject to the Extraordinary Special Tariff, families with many children and citizens over 75 years of age with an annual income of up to 8,000 euros.
EYDAP cites a significant increase in operational and energy costs, with the proposal being put out to public consultation by RAEYS, which will proceed with its evaluation.
The final charges that will appear on consumers’ bills will be determined through RAEYS.
