South Melbourne write history once again winning Australian Championship

With a performance reminiscent of its finest days, South Melbourne FC won the first ever Australian Championship, defeating the Marconi Stallions 2–0 — a result that sparked a wave of excitement among thousands of its supporters.

Despite persistent rain, around 5,000 fans — mostly Hellas loyalists — packed into the stadium at Alexandros.

The atmosphere was electric, and when the final whistle blew, the cry “Hellas–Hellas!” echoed so strongly that it seemed to travel far beyond the stadium.

Celebrations continued later at Lakeside Oval, where the party reached its peak.

On the field, Hellas started the match with incredible intensity and determination. From the very first minutes, they made it clear they wanted to dominate and send a strong message to the Stallions: this day belonged to them. Two quick attacking moves in the first five minutes set the tone.

The first spark came in the 11th minute: Manny Aguek stole the ball, dribbled past Anton Mlinaric with an impressive feint and finished powerfully, sending the crowd into the rafters. That 1–0 goal acted both as a flame to ignite the fans’ passion and fuel for the team.

At the 19th minute, Jordon Lampard threatened with a strong shot that was saved by the Stallions’ keeper, Hilton. From the resulting corner, a cross by Max Mikkola found Marco Jankovic, whose angled header made it 2–0. The stadium shook — Hellas wasn’t just ahead, but appeared unstoppable.

The “blues” kept pressing even beyond that. They came close to 3–0 in the 37th minute, when a shot by Bonada almost went in, only to sail just above the bar. Marconi tried to respond before halftime, but their efforts were cleared by Lopez; and at the end of the first half, VAR confirmed the ball never crossed the line.

In the second half, Hellas showed maturity, discipline, and full control of the game. Uchida threatened again, and in the 69th minute the Stallions had a chance with Swibel’s bicycle kick — but Lopez was unshakable.

In the final minutes, South Melbourne managed the lead like pros — cutting down space, nullifying any Stallions comeback attempt.

When the final whistle blew, players, coaching staff and fans became one bundle of joy.

The conquest of the first Australian Championship was not just a title — it was a moment of deep pride, vindication, and confirmation that the historic club remains one of the greatest in Greek and Australian football.
