Shock over bloody attack in Melbourne’s “Greek heart” of Oakleigh

Scenes of chaos and fear unfolded on Friday night in Eaton Mall, Oakleigh – widely known as the “Greek heart” of Melbourne – after a group of masked attackers targeted young people dining outdoors, sending hundreds into panic.

The incident occurred just before 7.45pm in one of the area’s busiest pedestrian precincts, packed with families and patrons, many from the Greek community. According to police, a group of around 10 to 12 individuals, some armed with machetes, approached a group of youths seated outside a dessert venue.

Witnesses said the attackers, who appeared to be part of a gang and were wearing masks, had earlier caused tension in the area before leaving and then returning. The situation escalated quickly when one of them allegedly pulled out a machete and attacked an 18-year-old.

The young man suffered injuries to his face and the back of his head, while also reportedly being kicked and punched after falling to the ground.

Police have described the attack as “targeted”, with those involved believed to be known to each other.

Dozens of bystanders fled in fear, with witnesses describing people “running and screaming” as panic spread through the crowded strip. Members of the public and nearby workers rushed to assist the injured and help protect others.

Emergency services quickly arrived, cordoning off the area as images showed blood on the pavement outside eateries. The 18-year-old was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. A 16-year-old was also reportedly attacked but not seriously hurt.

The offenders fled the scene on foot and remain at large, with police launching an intensive investigation. Authorities have appealed for anyone with information or footage to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria.

In response to the incident, police patrols are set to increase in the area over the weekend to help restore a sense of safety.
