Roadmap with Libya for delimitation of maritime zones by end of 2025

Greece’s Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said on Tuesday, that a roadmap for discussions with Libya for the delimitation of the maritime zones will be launched by the end of the year.

Speaking with Parapolitika FM, Gerapetritis said that Greece’s goal is to start an effort with Libya to demarcate the border.

“We are trying to have a multidimensional and balanced policy in Libya, which is a difficult country,” he noted  stressing “the more we cooperate, the more we prevent the ratification of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum.”

“For the time being, I have the feeling that we are not in danger in relation to a possible ratification, but we are on alert,” he said.

“We understand that the Turkish-Libyan memorandum is null and void in essence. Even if we had a ratification by [the Libyan] parliament, which I do not see in the near future, this would not make it legal, for the following simple reason: because Turkiye and Libya are not neighboring states, like Greece and Libya.”

The roadmap revelation comes two days after the visit of Director General of the Libyan Fund for Development and Reconstruction, Belgasem Haftar, son of Libyan warlord and commander of the Tobruk-based Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar.  Worth noting that he was received in Athens by both the Foreign Minister and the Prime Minister.

Some media claimed that Belgasem Haftar has reassured Athens that the Parliament would not ratify the Turkey-Libya maritime zones agreement.

Note that the Libyan Parliament is under control of Khalifa Haftar.

Referring to the two governments in Libya – the official but temporary in the West and Haftar’s in the East – Gerapetritis said “we are trying to balance the two.”

Regarding relations with Haftar’s government, he said that they were never abandoned, on the contrary, an attempt was made to restore relations with western Libya as well.
