The Panevrytanian Association of Melbourne reached a major milestone this year, celebrating its 50th anniversary with a gala event at the Vogue Ballroom last week.
Founders, long-time members, and new faces gathered to honour five decades of dedication, volunteerism, and cultural preservation—values that have defined the association since its beginnings.
President and Darebin City Councillor Vasilios Tsalkos addressed the guests, reflecting on the organisation’s origins.
“Fifty years ago, in 1975, a group of people gathered at the National Hotel in Richmond with a simple idea—to create a place where Greek culture could live on. From that, this club was born,” he said.
Founding member Basil Poulos also shared heartfelt memories of the early days and the passion that united the community.
The evening featured performances by Greek Australian musicians Dimitris Kavadas and George Kirkopoulos, whose music kept the dance floor full. Guests were also treated to traditional mountain tea—a symbolic nod to the association’s roots and connection to the rugged homeland of Evrytania.

Tsalkos highlighted achievements, including the purchase of a new property, which he said will “provide an income stream and help secure the club’s future for generations to come.”
Speaking to Neos Kosmos, Tsalkos said his goal to boost youth participation and ensure continuity:
“I want the next generations to feel proud of where their grandparents and great-grandparents came from. The future of our club depends on young people’s involvement, and we’d love to see new faces carry on the traditions that have meant so much to our community.”
He added that the association will use modern communications methods—to connect with younger members and share the stories and values of their heritage.
“We’re shifting from letter box drops to social , and other digital media including Greek media.”
The event ended with the cutting of the birthday cake followed by dancing, and general merriment – like all good birthdays.
