The Yemeni Houthis confirmed that their prime minister was killed by an Israeli air strike that took place on Thursday. The rebel group’s self-proclaimed Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi and several senior officials were the casualties of the Israeli air strike in Yemen that was reported on Thursday.

Saudi Arabian news site al-Hadath reports the Houthis’ foreign minister, as well as the ministers for justice, youth and sports, social affairs and labor, were killed in the attack. The Houthis, however, did not go into detail about the officials killed.

The Houthis president Mahdi al-Mashat, said that several other ministers “sustained moderate and serious injuries” as a result of the strike. Now Muhammad Ahmed Miftah, the Houthi deputy prime minister, would take over Rahawi’s role.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched the attack on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, where the Iran-backed terrorist organization’s headquarters are based. In an X post IDF also confirmed that Houthi Prime Minister, Ahmed Al-Rahawi, along with additional senior officials of the Houthi terrorist regime were eliminated.

Israeli officials said on Thursday that the IDF had targeted Sanaa days after the Houthis  fired a missile that contained a new type of cluster sub-munition against Israel.

The Houthi high officials were targeted during “a routine workshop held by the government to evaluate its activity and performance over the past year,” the presidency said in a statement broadcast on Houthi-run television.

The Houthis in power at Yemen

The Houthis are a Zaydi Shiite movement that has been fighting Yemen’s Sunni-majority government since 2004.

They won the war and rose in power in Yemen in 2014. They control a big part of north-western Yemen since 2016, after ousting the internationally recognized Sanaa and starting a devastating civil war.

Yemeni officials and Sunni Arab states have repeatedly alleged that Iran and its proxy army Hezbollah have provided arms, training, and financial support to the Houthis. However,  Iranian and Hezbollah officials in Lebanon have denied or downplayed the claims.

The United States, in coordination with Saudi Arabia, has presented physical evidence of Iranian arms transfers to the group. The US has labelled Houthis a terrorist organization.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the Houthis had announced that they will fight on the side of the Palestinians. They regularly launched missiles at Israel and targeted cargo ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with drones and missiles, saying they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians. Their acts at sea challenged maritime security

In turn, Israel responded with air strikes on targets in Houthi-held parts of Yemen, stating that the aim is to curtail Houthi attacks.
