Greece’s water company EYDAP to increase rates

The Greek government announced increases in water rates of EYDAP network, supplying with drinking water the region of Attica, covering the needs of more than 40% of the country’s population.

In an interview with Parapolitika FM, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, announced the increases last Friday, October 31, just hours after the Prime Minister revealed an ambitious plan to meet the country’s water needs due to water scarcity.

The spokesman noted that EYDAP will announce the exact rates, however, according to the company’s briefing to the government, the planned increases are minimal, daily kathimerini reported.

“The country will continue to have one of the cheapest water supplies in Europe,” he said.

According to Marinakis, the main issue is the broader problem of drought, stressing the need to complete long-delayed infrastructure projects.

“We are at the eleventh hour regarding drought and water reserves, especially in Attica,” he said, adding that projects to address the issue will move forward in the coming years.

Moreover, he described the Greek state’s 51% ownership in EYDAP as non-negotiable and took aim at the opposition, stating that “the privatization of water is, once again, going down the drain.”

PS I have to draw attention to two things:

1. When then the New Democracy government announced price increases in electricity it was claimed” “Increases will be 2-3 euros, you won’t even notice.” – Many years have pasted since then, and many extra hundreds euros left our wallets too.

2. Mitsotakis ambitious water plan has absolute no provisions about decreasing water used for swimming pools and gold course (oh, the tourists!) or the huge amounts consumed by the Data centers mostly to be established in Attica (oh, the development!)
