Greece delivers demarche to Kiev over USV drone in Lefkada

Greece officially delivered a demarche to Kiev over the Ukrainian marine drone found in a cave of the island of Lefkada last month.

The Ukrainian marine drone was discovered by fishermen and it was loaded with explosives.

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated during a briefing of diplomatic correspondents that he has informed the EU High Representative, Kaia Kalas, about the results of the investigation regarding the drone. Gerapetritis also had relevant communication with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, while he raised the issue in person with his Ukrainian counterpart in Limassol.

What the demarche says

On Thursday and Friday (May 28 and 29), a written and oral protest demarche was held in Kiev, in which the following is highlighted:

“The vessel seriously endangered maritime traffic. It could have caused losses of innocent civilians and incalculable environmental damage. The transfer of military operations to the Mediterranean threatens national security and may cause damage to the national economy.

Ukraine’s right to self-defense cannot justify such actions. Greece calls on Ukraine to refrain from similar actions in the future as well as from the unjustified transfer of operations to the Mediterranean.

It is also noted that Athens is now awaiting Kiev’s official response to the incident.”

The drone, a Magura V5 unmanned surface vehicle made in Ukraine was discovered on May 8, 2026.
