Dozens of dead sheep in stage of decomposition have been found in the waters of Alfeios river, the biggest stream in terms of length and water volume in Peloponnese.
Even though the cause of death of the sheep is still to be investigated, authorities are on alert due to dangers to public health and the environment, a severe contamination equal to a time bomb.
Of particular concern is the possibility that the animals were infected with smallpox, which if proven makes the situation even more explosive.
If such a scenario is confirmed, then the prolonged stay of dead animals in the Alfeios turns the river into a source of contamination of enormous proportions, with incalculable consequences for both public health and the ecosystem of the region.
At the same time, the region of Ilia records new sheep and goat small pox cases every day, which makes the situation even more explosive.

This incident highlights in the harshest way the criminal indifference and complete lack of responsibility on the part of a portion of livestock farmers, who, blatantly violating the legislation and health protocols, choose to “dump” dead animals in the natural environment. Practices that not only threaten public health and the environment, but directly undermine livestock farming itself and the future of the region.
The Veterinary Service of the Regional Unit of Ilia has already been informed of the incident, which is expected to proceed immediately with an autopsy at the scene.
In accordance with the prescribed procedures, the relevant protocol will be followed, which includes the collection of dead animals and their transport to an approved unit in Athens for cremation.
According to local media reports, last month dead sheep have also been found in other places in the Alfeios area and there have even been similar announcements from the Veterinary Service of the Regional Unit of Ilia.
However, this time the number of dead animals seems to be quite large.
According to information and complaints, dead sheep have been found near the mouth of the Alfeios River, as well as in the coastal area.
