A 2.5-year old girl from the UK has been hospitalized in critical condition on the island of Rhodes after she fell into a hotel swimming pool in the area of Lardos. The British toddler was having vacations with family and relatives.
The child reportedly escaped the attention of the adults and fell into the pool where she is said to have remained in the bottom for at least ten minutes, had inhaled a large amount of water and was unresponsive.
When the body of the toddler was recovered, she was transported to Rhodes General Hospital by ambulance shortly after 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Accessing the child’s health condition hospital doctors had to decide to whether to airlift the toddler to the island of Crete or Athens for further treatment. However, it is questionable if her condition would allow such a transport due to a brain edema.
According to local media, though, the child’s condition is very critical and is brain dead.
On Tuesday afternoon, police arrested the child’s 30-year-old uncle who was assigned to watch over the girl.
Arrested was also a 54-year-old Greek in charge of the hotel, while police has filed against the hotel director.
The incident comes less than a week after a five-year-old boy from India drowned in a Santorini hotel pool.
