Another good year for Caretta-Caretta, with 6,100 nests at Kyparissia, says NGO Archelon

The coastal zone of Kyparissiakos Gulf, in the western Peloponnese, has consistently held the higher number of nests of the protected sea turtle Caretta-Caretta in Greece, said the annual report of Archelon – the Sea Turtle Project for their protection for the year 2025.

According to the report, the Kyparissiakos Gulf and the Laganas Gulf of Zakynthos island contain over 57% of all Caretta caretta nests in the European Union. The last year, in particular, was one of the most productive of recent decades, with Archelon registering nearly 6,100 nests, signalling a 74% increase in numbers compared to the average of the last 12 years.

“This success, a result of systematic protection of nests and hatchling that Archelon has been implementing since 1992 necessitates the immediate institutional support of the Nature Conservation Area and the implementation of the National Action Plan for Caretta sea turtles, in order to safeguard this fragile achievement.”

Among the findings in the report are the following:

– Of nearly 6,100 nests in Kyparissia, 5,200 were located within 9.5 km, and 900 found north of Neda. The nests are under observation and protection.

– 90 volunteers and researchers from Greece and abroad participated in the program from May to September. Of them, 11 assumed supervisory field roles and 27 college students carried out a field report requirement.

– A total of 5,800 visitors and residents of the area participated in informational and educational events that included guided walks and a tour of the Agiannaki Environmental Station premises, presentations at schools and participating hotels, voluntary beach cleanings, and briefings at seasonal stations in Kalo Nero and Kyparissia.

– In the context of scientific research for the European Project LIFE MareNatura, new satellite transmitters were placed on two adult sea turtles, providing more information on feeding grounds and migratory routes.

Archelon’s report noted, however, that despite the impressive egg-laying results, human intervention and pressure has continued, and it called on the state to apply the Action Plan adopted in 2021. It also called on the state for financial support so it may continue the registration and protection of nests and hatchling. Up to now, Archelon said, all actions are funded from its own funds, while actions promoting the protection and management of the area by regional authorities are absent.

The organization also called for the acceleration of application of the Plan for the Management of the Natural Conservation Area, and welcomed the planned establishment of the Marine Park of the Ionian Sea.
