Tim Echols, 64, has served on the Georgia Public Service Commission for 15 years.

A Georgia native, Echols lives in Hoschton in Jackson County with his wife, Windy. The couple has seven grown children. Echols has a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from the University of Georgia. He is the founder of TeenPact, a nonprofit Christian leadership training program for conservative high school students.

Echols declined a live digital, phone, or in-person interview by The Current GA, which we request for all candidate profiles before an election.

At a campaign stop Friday at the Crab Shack on Tybee, Echols touted the support he’s getting from labor unions.

“Twelve labor unions have endorsed me, mainly because I finished Plant Vogtle,” he said, referring to the controversial $35 billion expansion of the nuclear power plant near Waynesboro. “And they work there, and they want more work.”

He’d like to see them get it.

“I’m planning to get another four nuclear reactors started before I leave this job in 2030,” Echols said. “I am planning on continuing to put Georgia in a really great place.”

The Republican was first elected in 2009 as a political newcomer. He was reelected for a six-year term in 2016. The scheduled 2022 election was canceled because of a Voting Rights lawsuit centered on Georgia’s at-large system of voting for the PSC. The state legislature extended the terms of the sitting commissioners, allowing Echols to serve nine years without facing voters.
