The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Alexander Darakhvelidze, in Geneva, participated in the discussion of the 2025 national report on the human rights situation in Georgia, within the 4th cycle of the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia shared the glimpses of the discussion event on its official Facebook Page on January 26, 2026, Monday. The Georgian Ministry also shared a small note about the event along with its glimpses.
During the session, representatives of UN member states had the opportunity to ask questions and provide recommendations regarding Georgia’s human rights policies and institutional reforms. The discussion focused on progress achieved since the previous UPR cycle, as well as existing challenges and future priorities.
Georgia’s delegation highlighted the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and cooperation with international human rights mechanisms, emphasizing its readiness to continue dialogue and implement constructive recommendations.
Aleksandre Darakhvelidze introduced the members of the Council to the reforms implemented in the Ministry during the financial period and the results achieved in the fight against crime. The Deputy Minister has paid special attention to the legislative changes and measures taken in recent times to effectively combat illegal immigration, organized crime, including drug crime.
During his speech, Alexander Darakhvelidze also focused attention on women and domestic violence prevention and protection of minors’ rights.
The Deputy Minister of Interior informed the public about the measures taken by the police to ensure law and order during the ongoing protests in the country recently.
The Universal Periodical Review (UPR) is a mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council under which member states submit a report on human rights protection once every five years. This year, representatives of the executive, legislative, and judicial authorities are included in the Georgian delegation.
