Georgia expands protected areas across seven regions

Georgia: During 2025, the creation of protected territories was carried out in 7 regions of Georgia: Racha, Lechkhumi, Svaneti, Guria, Samegrelo, Imereti, and Kakheti.

In particular:

  • Racha – It is planned to expand Racha National Park by 4,759 hectares; a protected landscape will be formed in the Ambrolauri municipality.
  • Lechkhumi – Establishment of National Park, Nature Monuments, and Monuments are planned.
  • Guria – Work was underway on the expansion of protected areas.
  • Svaneti – It is planned to establish the Svaneti Protected Areas.
  • Samegrelo – Establishment of Egrisi National Park is planned.
  • Kakheti – In Gurjaani, Telavi, and Sagarejo municipalities, it is planned to establish a protected landscape of the National Park.
  • Imereti – Establishment of the Rioni school in the area.

Currently, the area of protected territories of Georgia is 929,996 hectares, which is about 13.34% of the country’s territory.

The Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia shared the details through an announcement on its official Facebook page on January 7, 2026, Wednesday.

As a result of the establishment of the new protected areas and the expansion of the existing ones, the total area of the protected areas will increase by about 220,000 hectares and reach 1,150,000 hectares, which constitutes about 16.4% of the territory of Georgia.

The expansion and establishment of protected areas aim to preserve Georgia’s rich biodiversity, protect unique ecosystems, and promote sustainable use of natural resources. These initiatives also contribute to climate change mitigation, eco-tourism development, and the strengthening of environmental protection policies at both regional and national levels.
