David Gurgenidze presents a report at Presidium session

The Rector of the Technical University of Georgia, member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, academician David Gurgenidze, presented a public report at the Presidium session at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia.

It is worth noting that this will lay out the historical foundations of the establishment of a long, sustainable, and strategic scientific collaboration between Georgia and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for decades. The rector of the Technical University of Georgia discussed the historical context of the formation of one of the world’s largest scientific-research centers – the European Organization for Nuclear Research in the field of particle physics, its unique role in the development of fundamental research, technological innovation and scientific diplomacy on a global scale, and the CE spoke RN as a global research on the importance of infrastructure for the advancement of modern civilization.

Academician Davit Gurgenidze reviewed in detail the evolution of involvement of Georgian scientific and research institutions in CERN’s scientific ecosystem, including the Technical University of Georgia and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University from 1960s to today, focusing attention on their institutional participation in high energy physics and engineering fields, Kar spoke On the contribution of all scientists in CERN such small experiments such as CMS, ATLAS and ShiP.

According to the academician David Gurgenidze, in 2023, a new protocol was signed between Georgia-CERN with the involvement of STU and TSU, according to which Georgian scientist, Professor Zviad Tsamalaidze, director of the Center for Quantum Physics and Engineering Technologies of STU, and in 2024, there will be a “Future Circular Collider” between STU and CERN.

Within the framework of the initiative, a new, most important memorandum of scientific partnership was signed, which is planned to be implemented in 2040-2045.

According to the rector, this event is also important because in the region a scientific contract of this scale has been signed only with the Technical University of Georgia, which opens the way for the Georgian scientific potential in the largest megaprojects in the direction of fundamental research.

Academician David Gurgenidze’s public report and key issues covered in it, as the best way to develop the country’s research potential and integrate it into the international scientific space, were highly evaluated by the President, Vice President, and Academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. Zviad Gabisonia, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth, and Revaz Lominadze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, expressed their views on the generation of raising the issue about Georgia’s associated membership.

As the author of the public report, academician David Gurgenidze said at the meeting, it is desirable and necessary that the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia be representative and actively involved in these processes.
