The Gambian Scorpions pulled off a stunning 3-1 win over Kenya’s Harambee Stars in Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier, moving closer to a potential play-off spot.
Sheriff Sinyan gave Gambia the lead in the 12th minute, beating the goalkeeper with a clinical finish.
Yankuba Minteh, Brighton’s rising star, doubled the advantage in the 26th minute, driving home a precise shot that left Kenya scrambling.
Musa Barrow, Gambia’s talisman, wrapped up the scoring in the 38th minute after an earlier missed opportunity could have made it 4-0.
The Scorpions dominated possession in the first half, keeping Kenya on the back foot. Despite pressure, the Harambee Stars held off further damage until halftime.
Kenya came out strongly after the break, determined to reduce the deficit. Gambian defenders resisted repeated attacks. After the break, the Harambee Stars pressed for a goal.
Substitute Ryan Ogam came off the bench and scored in the 81st minute, reducing the deficit and giving Kenyan fans a moment of hope, though it was not enough to alter the result.
The visitors’ efforts, however, were not enough to alter the outcome.
Gambia had been forced to play their home match away in Ivory Coast due to a CAF ban on the Independence Stadium in Banjul over inadequate facilities.
That earlier 3-3 draw had put pressure on the Scorpions to secure a victory, which they did in style.
With the win, Gambia climbed from fifth to third in their group, keeping their World Cup ambitions alive. Their performance demonstrates tactical discipline, attacking intent, and a growing depth in Gambian football talent.
