In a landmark development for the country’s healthcare sector, Jaama Specialty Hospital officially opened its doors on Friday, May 1, 2026, in Senegambia. Named after the Wolof word for “peace,” the facility is poised to deliver advanced, specialist-led care and reduce the need for Gambians to seek treatment abroad.

The opening ceremony marked not just the launch of a new medical center but a significant step toward elevating healthcare standards across The Gambia.

Dr. Kebba Mareneh, the Medical Director and a key figure behind the project, emphasized the hospital’s mission during his remarks: “We are here to raise the standard. We have started this hospital with a clear purpose: to deliver specialist-led and patient-centered care that will change lives. From neurosurgery and orthopedics, where timely, skilled intervention can mean the difference between disability and independence.”

Jaama Specialty Hospital plans to offer a wide range of specialized services currently in short supply, including neurology, pediatric surgery, radiology, infectious disease management, microbiology, and hematology. The facility is designed to address both community needs and national gaps in advanced medical care.

Dr. Mareneh also highlighted the project’s innovative aspects, including health tourism and regional training initiatives. “We felt that there were things that we wanted to bring that wouldn’t necessarily be available at most other places. Some of those things include health tourism. The founders have already started training people from around the sub-region,” he said. This approach could position The Gambia as a destination for quality medical services in West Africa.

Musa Camara of the Regional Health Directorate Western One described the occasion as deeply symbolic. “Today is not just about opening a building, it is about opening doors of hope, healing, and higher standards of care for communities. This hospital represents a vision that has been nurtured with dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism for improving lives.”

Access to quality healthcare remains a pressing challenge in The Gambia, where public facilities often operate beyond capacity. Private institutions like Jamma play a vital role by absorbing non-emergency and specialized cases, allowing public hospitals to focus on emergencies and vulnerable populations. This collaboration is expected to drive overall improvements in service quality, technology adoption, and patient satisfaction.

Over the years, the Ministry of Health has made notable progress in primary care, maternal and child health, disease surveillance, and vaccination programmes. The addition of modern private facilities complements these efforts by easing pressure on the public system and reducing the financial and emotional burden families face when seeking treatment overseas.

The official opening was attended by numerous health professionals, underscoring broad support within the medical community. As Jamma Specialty Hospital begins operations, its founders and staff have pledged a daily commitment to excellence, guided by the belief that high-quality care should be accessible at home.

With its state-of-the-art equipment and specialist team, the hospital sets a new benchmark for healthcare delivery in The Gambia, offering peace of mind—and peace through better health—to residents and the wider region.
