The Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD), in partnership with ChildFund The Gambia, has concluded a two-day forum (20–21 August) to push for stronger disability-inclusive policies and legislative reforms.

The event, held at Wallimang Hotel, gathered government officials, local leaders, disability advocates, and policy experts. Moderated by GFD Executive Director Sainey Camara, with technical support from ChildFund’s Sunkung Danso, the forum highlighted the urgent need to close gaps in disability rights implementation.

Delivering the keynote, GFD Chairperson and Principal Magistrate Muhammed Krubally stressed the importance of aligning the Persons with Disabilities Act 2021 with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

“Our principles must be explained, respected, promoted, and protected. They cannot be compromised,” he said.

Policy consultant Lamin Fatajo noted that disability inclusion requires removing social barriers, not just addressing impairments. Citing the UN CRPD, UNICEF’s Disability Inclusion Policy, and the World Bank model, he called for reforms in health, agriculture, and education, including better access to healthcare, assistive devices, and mental health services.

Participants recommended:

  • Aligning national laws with CRPD standards;
  • Training professionals in inclusive service delivery;
  • Expanding disability-friendly communication (Braille, sign language, audio);
  • Establishing an inter-ministerial task force;
  • Boosting national awareness to tackle stigma.

The forum ended with a pledge from stakeholders to work together in advancing disability rights and ensuring equal participation in education, healthcare, employment, and public life.
