President Adama Barrow has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, saying The Gambia’s democracy is strongest when the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary operate independently while working together in the national interest.
Speaking at the maiden Tripartite Conference, President Barrow said the country remains guided by the Latimer House Principles of Accountability, Independence and the Rule of Law, which promote the separation of powers and good governance across the three arms of government.
He said The Gambia is committed to building resilient institutions, protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring justice is upheld.
“The strength of our nation lies not in the power of one branch, but in the balance among all three,” the President said.
Barrow described the conference as more than a platform for dialogue, calling it a shared commitment by each arm of government to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.
He said the Executive would govern with accountability, the Legislature would legislate responsibly, and the Judiciary would continue to administer justice fairly and independently.
The President also stressed that the rule of law remains the foundation of peace, justice and sustainable development, insisting that it is “not negotiable” in the country’s democratic journey.
