The President of the Confederation of Gambian Industries (CGI) has called on government to take urgent measures towards easing electricity costs for manufacturers.
The CGI President, Sir Farimang Saho made the call during the 10th ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum held in Banjul.
He questioned what policies could be introduced to subsidize energy and improve clean power transmission, citing the recent addition of 23 megawatts from the Jambur solar plant.
In response, the Minister of Petroleum and Energy admitted that the new capacity was insufficient to significantly lower costs in the short-term but said government’s long-term objective remained to provide affordable and reliable electricity.
The exchange highlighted the central role of energy in boosting industrial competitiveness and sustaining economic growth in The Gambia.
