Tough Driving Weather Today in Southern Finland; Extreme Cold to Grip Finland By the Weekend | Finland Today | News in English

Snowfall will make driving more difficult on Thursday across southern and central Finland as well as parts of Lapland, notes the weather service Foreca.

In the south, some areas experienced freezing drizzle in the morning. Snow will persist in southern and central Finland through Thursday but is expected to gradually diminish.

Over the weekend, a snow system is forecasted to remain outside Finland’s borders; however if predictions change, southeastern Finland could also receive snow.

Snowfall should subside by Thursday evening.

On Thursday night, temperatures are predicted to range from -15C to -30C in cloudy regions; clearer skies over Lapland may result in even colder temperatures.

Daytime highs on Thursday will be between -5C and -15C in the south and center and between -15C and -25C in the north.

Extreme Cold Expected Across Finland by Week’s End

By the end of the week, nighttime lows could drop to around -30C even in southern areas.

From Friday to Sunday, daytime temperatures will generally range between -10C and -20C with even colder conditions possible in Lapland.

Southern and western coastal areas are expected to experience milder temperatures between -5C and -10C. Cloud cover in the south will depend on a low-pressure system over southeastern Finland which may bring clouds but little or no snowfall.

Central and northern regions are likely to have more sunshine overall though some areas could see heavier cloud cover locally. Nights toward the end of the week will be extremely cold: frost is expected to fall below –20C in southern and central areas and below –30C in the north.

In clear regions, temperatures could drop below –30C in the south and center or even reach –35C in the north.
