Finland Honors Alvar Aalto and National Design Legacy with Flag Day on Architecture Day, February 3 | Finland Today | News in English

Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a renowned Finnish architect and designer whose career spanned several decades and left a significant mark on modern architecture and design.

Certainly, Alvar Aalto is a name that immediately comes to mind when considering innovation in modern architecture.

The Ministry of the Interior recommends flying flags across the country on February 3 in honor of Alvar and Aino Aalto and Finnish architecture and design. Flagging will begin at 08:00 in the morning and end at sunset.

February 3 is Alvar Aalto’s birthday and has been celebrated as Architecture Day since 2012.

Architecture and design are an important part of Finnish expertise. Finnish design combines values related to well-being, education and our relationship with nature. Design and functionality are concepts that have shaped Finland’s image around the world.

The Ministry of the Interior recommended flying the flag in honor of Alvar and Aino Aalto for the first time on February 3, 2022. On that day, government agencies and institutions are required to display the flag.
