Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed an 18 percent decrease in overall crime for the months of August, September, and October.
He states that 4,049 cases were recorded during this period, compared to 4,960 cases reported in the same months last year.
However, despite the overall decline, the Commissioner reports that while the Southern, Western, Eastern, and Central divisions registered reductions, the Northern Division recorded a three-percent increase.
“During the three months, overall crimes decreased by 18% as there were 4,049 crime cases reported during this period. when compared to 4,960 cases, for the same period last year. The divisions that recorded decreases were the Southern, Western, Eastern, and Central divisions, while the Northern division recorded an increase of 3%.”
“During this same reporting period, serious crime recorded a 35% decrease, with all five divisions recording decreases.”
Tudravu adds that while crime rates involving women and children have decreased, there is still concern as a significant number of domestic-related cases continue to be reported in both categories.
“For crimes against women, there was an overall decrease of 10% and a 34% decrease in crimes against children. However, still of concern for both these crimes, are the number of domestic related cases, such as assault, indecent assault, and sexual offenses.”
