Flash flood warning remains for Vanua Levu

An active trough of low pressure hovering over the country has prompted a flash flood warning for a number of low-lying and flood-prone areas in Vanua Levu, the Fiji Meteorological Service stated in a bulletin issued at 9.30am today.

Areas under the warning include Labasa, Wailevu, Vunivesi, Savusavu, Bucaisau, Drawa, Nabalevale, Nakorotari, Nasekula, Batiri, Seaqaqa, Wainunu, Nasekawa and Taveuni.

A flash flood alert also remains in force for the rest of the Fiji Group as unsettled weather continues to intensify.

The weather office said the country remains under the influence of an active trough of low pressure, which is expected to remain slow-moving through tomorrow. Cloud, showers and periods of heavy rain are forecast to persist, increasing the risk of sudden flooding.

According to the bulletin, the main hazard is flash flooding caused by isolated heavy rain, which may occur with little to no warning.

The service warned of likely impacts including flooding of small streams and drainage systems, water levels rising over low-water bridges and Irish crossings, road disruptions, and possible flooding of homes in low-lying areas.

Members of the public have been urged to remain alert, avoid flooded areas, and monitor updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service.
