The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has announced that it will hold its Public Hearings in Suva on October 7 and 8 at the Suva Civic Centre.
Established to promote national healing and reconciliation, the Commission’s primary aim is to foster social cohesion through open engagement in truth-telling about Fiji’s political upheavals, beginning from the 1987 coup periods onwards.
“The TRC facilitates safe spaces for survivors and witnesses to share their testimonies in either public or private hearings,” said the TRC in a public notice.
“While it does not possess the authority to summon individuals, it may examine witnesses under oath to uncover the truth. Strict security protocols and confidentiality measures are in place to handle all personal and sensitive information.”
The upcoming hearings are closed to the public. However, registered media personnel will be permitted entry to report on proceedings.
The Commission’s work includes assessing the impact of the coups on key sectors of Fijian society and enabling survivors to pursue healing and closure through acknowledgment of their experiences.
