Cabinet approves realignment of Government’s financial year

Cabinet has approved the realignment of the Government’s financial year to the calendar year, a move that will strengthen planning, budgeting and reporting across Government.

The transition is proposed to take effect from 1 January 2028, allowing sufficient time to complete the legislative, financial and administrative preparations required for a smooth implementation.

Aligning the financial year with the calendar year will improve coordination between Government planning, budgeting, monitoring and reporting systems.

In a statement, government says it will also enhance policy implementation and create greater consistency with national statistics and the reporting frameworks used by development partners.

The change is expected to support more effective decision-making and strengthen the way Government plans, delivers and measures national development outcomes.
