MBABANE— The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has appointed Engineer Vusi Mabuza as Chief Roads Engineer with immediate effect, following a decision by the Civil Service Commission, in a move aimed at strengthening the planning, management, and delivery of the country’s road infrastructure.
The appointment was confirmed on 2 April 2026 by Principal Secretary Thulani Mkhaliphi, who said Mabuza’s elevation reflects both his technical expertise and long standing contribution within the roads department.
Mabuza rises to the position after serving as Principal Roads Engineer for the past ten years, a role in which he was responsible for overseeing the planning, supervision, and execution of major road infrastructure projects across the country. Over the years, he has been directly involved in coordinating project implementation, ensurin compliance with engineering standards, and managing relationships with contractors and key stakeholders.
Having grown through the ranks within the civil engineering division, Mabuza is regarded within the Ministry as a seasoned professional with a deep institutional understanding of the country’s road network and infrastructure needs. His experience spans project management, infrastructure planning, and stakeholder engagement, all of which are critical to the successful delivery of large scale public works.
The Ministry said his appointment comes at a time when there is increasing focus on improving road infrastructure, enhancing maintenance systems, and accelerating the rollout of both ongoing and planned projects. These include efforts to upgrade key road corridors, improve accessibility in rural areas, and ensure the sustainability of existing infrastructure through routine and periodic maintenance.
In a statement, Mkhaliphi congratulated Mabuza on his appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership.
“We congratulate Mabuza for this appointment and believe he will take the baton and drive the national roads infrastructure ambitions to a much higher level,” he said.
The Ministry further noted that Mabuza’s appointment reinforces its commitment to building internal capacity and promoting continuity within the department, particularly in technical leadership roles that are central to national development.
As Chief Roads Engineer, Mabuza is expected to provide strategic direction to the roads department, oversee the implementation of infrastructure projects, and ensure that engineering standards and delivery timelines are met, in line with government priorities.
His appointment is also expected to support broader economic development efforts, as improved road infrastructure remains key to facilitating trade, enhancing connectivity, and supporting service delivery across the country.
