THOUSANDS JOIN BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WALK IN LOBAMBA

BY MFANUFIKILE KHATHWANE

LOBAMBA – Thousands of people from across Eswatini came together on Saturday, November 1, 2025, to participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, organised by the Eswatini Cancer Network.

The event, held in Lobamba, aimed to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection while mobilising support for the network’s ongoing initiatives.

The march began at Lobamba Technical Centre, proceeded to Mantenga Waterfalls, and returned to the starting point, drawing participants from companies, community organizations, and civil society groups. The walk served as both a symbolic and practical effort to combat cancer through public engagement, education, and fundraising.

Speaking to Eswatini TV, participants highlighted the importance of supporting the network’s work, which includes cancer screening, education, and outreach programs.

“Supporting this initiative can save lives,” said one participant, emphasizing the role of early detection and preventive measures in fighting cancer.

Minister of Health, Mduduzi Matsebula, also joined the event, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to early detection as a cornerstone of effective cancer treatment.

“We still believe in the basics — that cancer can be treated successfully when detected early,” he said, urging communities to adopt preventive health measures and regular screenings.

Tengetile Kubheka, Director of the Eswatini Cancer Network, explained that the organization has expanded its focus beyond breast and mouth cancers to address all forms of cancer affecting the population.

“Our work is now larger than ever, and we need the continued support of the community and private sector to make a meaningful impact,” she said.

The event also featured inspiring stories from cancer survivors, including Rotiyah Shabangu, who shared her journey of resilience after being diagnosed at an advanced stage.

“It is possible to survive cancer, but the right support is crucial,” Shabangu said, highlighting the importance of mental health and stress management in recovery.

The walk saw participation from organizations such as SOS Children’s Villages Eswatini, which joined in solidarity with cancer patients and survivors, reinforcing the message that community engagement is key in combating the disease.

Events like the Lobamba walk demonstrate the power of collective action and awareness campaigns in reducing the impact of cancer on Eswatini’s population. Continued education, screening, and support are critical steps toward a healthier future for all citizens.
