New Tata Tiago enters market at E185k

Mbabane – Tata Motors has returned to the South African passenger car market with the launch of the new Tata Tiago, which is priced from E184 900 and enters as one of the cheapest vehicles in the country.

The hatchback, unveiled this week, is being marketed as a budget-friendly option for city drivers. Prices range from E184 900 for the entry-level 1.2 XM MT to E224 900 for the 1.2 XT AMT, with a more premium XZ model expected to follow. Its main rivals include the Hyundai Grand i10, Kia Picanto, Suzuki Celerio, Renault Kwid and Volkswagen Polo Vivo.

According to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Distributor CEO Thato Magasa, the Tiago is designed to meet the needs of urban motorists looking for affordability without losing out on safety and comfort.

The Tiago’s steering wheel has an illuminated badge.

Two trims are available at launch. The XM comes with a 3.5-inch infotainment system, two speakers, rear parking sensors, central locking, air conditioning, electric windows and a digital instrument cluster. The XT adds a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four speakers, a multifunction steering wheel and a reverse camera. The upcoming XZ will include a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless connectivity, cruise control, push-button start, LED headlights and a high-definition reversing camera.

Under the bonnet, the Tiago is powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron three-cylinder engine producing 63kW and 113Nm. Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual or a five-speed automated manual gearbox. Tata claims the model consumes 5.0 litres per 100km, appealing to cost-conscious drivers.

In SA, the Tiago range comprises 3 derivatives at launch.

The Tiago rides on McPherson struts in the front and a rear twist beam with coil springs, promising comfort for up to five passengers. Safety features include dual airbags, hill hold control, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and a reinforced body structure that earned it a four-star Global NCAP crash test rating in 2020.

The package is backed by a two-year or 30 000km service plan and a five-year or 125 000km warranty.

Tata Tiago prices:
• 1.2 XM MT – E184 900
• 1.2 XT MT – E209 900
• 1.2 XT AMT – E224 900
