MBABANE – The future of the Charity Cup now rests in the hands of football supporters, who have been given the power to decide whether the popular tournament should return to the local football calendar.
The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE), in partnership with Skyfly, has proposed the revival of the competition and is seeking to secure a sponsorship package worth E5 million to bring the tournament back to life.
If approved, the revamped Charity Cup would offer one of the most lucrative rewards in local football, with the tournament champions set to pocket a staggering E1 million in prize money.
In a move aimed at ensuring public participation, football fans will be asked to vote on whether they support the return of the competition, which has traditionally served as a curtain-raiser to the football season while also promoting charitable causes.
The proposed comeback has already generated excitement among football followers, many of whom have fond memories of the tournament’s entertaining matches and community impact.
As part of preparations for the possible revival, renowned football personality Themba “Mthimbawawa” Xaba has been appointed as the Charity Cup Public Relations Officer (PRO). Xaba is expected to spearhead awareness campaigns and engage supporters throughout the voting process.
PLE officials believe the return of the Charity Cup could inject fresh excitement into domestic football while creating additional revenue opportunities for clubs and stakeholders.
The spotlight now turns to the fans, whose verdict will determine whether the Charity Cup makes a highly anticipated return or remains a part of Eswatini football history.
Should supporters vote in favour of the proposal, the tournament could once again become one of the biggest attractions on the local football calendar, with a lucrative prize fund and renewed corporate backing set to raise its profile.
