MBABANE – Learners from several Eswatini schools have been praised for demonstrating exceptional leadership, diplomacy and public speaking skills during the 5th Waterford KaMhlaba Model United Nations (WK MUN) Conference, held from July 17 to 18 at Waterford KaMhlaba UWCSA.
The annual conference brought together delegates from 17 local and international schools, including public, private, rural and urban institutions, providing a platform for young people to debate global issues, negotiate solutions and experience the workings of the United Nations through simulated committee sessions.
Among the participating schools were Woodlands High School, St Anne’s High School, Sisekelo High School and Nkonyeni College, whose learners confidently represented their schools while exchanging ideas with peers from diverse backgrounds.
Making its first appearance at the conference, Woodlands High School sent a delegation of 10 learners who embraced the opportunity to develop their leadership and communication skills. The learners participated in debates on pressing international issues, collaborated with delegates from other schools and gained first-hand experience in diplomacy.
Reflecting on the experience, the school said its delegates exceeded expectations.
“We were immensely proud to see our delegates actively contributing with confidence, enthusiasm and thoughtful ideas. They embraced every opportunity to learn, collaborate and make their voices heard,” the school said.
Woodlands High School also thanked Waterford KaMhlaba UWCSA for hosting the conference and creating an environment that encouraged learning, collaboration and cultural exchange.
“Our delegates returned inspired, having gained new knowledge, built meaningful connections and enjoyed an experience they will cherish for a lifetime,” the school added.
Meanwhile, St Anne’s High School honoured its delegates during a student-led certificate handover ceremony, where 10 learners received certificates of participation, while three were recognised as Outstanding Speakers. The ceremony also showcased learners’ leadership as they took charge of the programme, sharing insights on Model United Nations, Africa Week and the skills acquired through the conference.
Sisekelo High School commended its delegation for displaying confidence, responsibility and a commitment to positive change, saying the learners represented the school with integrity while strengthening their public speaking and negotiation skills.
At Nkonyeni College, four delegates – Sibulele Mapanzene, Aphile Mia Magagula, Sharon Rweyemera and Maria Chipande – were recognised for their outstanding performances in their respective committees after demonstrating excellence in debate and diplomacy.
Beyond the awards and recognition, the conference reinforced the importance of preparing young people to become globally minded leaders by equipping them with critical thinking, teamwork, negotiation and communication skills. For many of the participants, the experience marked the beginning of a lifelong journey in leadership and global citizenship.
