MBABANE – The governments of Eswatini and South Africa have strengthened their long-standing cooperation on water management following the signing of the revised KOBWA Treaty, aimed at modernising the management of the Komati Basin.
The agreement was officially signed by Prince Lonkhokhela, Eswatini’s Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, and Pemmy Majodina, South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation. The revised treaty marks a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the two countries in the sustainable management of shared water resources.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Prince Lonkhokhela reflected on the progress made in ensuring reliable water access for communities. He noted that in the past many people had to fetch water directly from rivers, while today many households have access to water through modern infrastructure.
The minister emphasised that water plays a crucial role in national development and social stability. He said the government remains committed to investing in clean and accessible water for citizens, adding that reliable water supply contributes to peace and prosperity within communities.
On her part, Majodina highlighted the importance of continued partnership between the two neighbouring countries. She described the cooperation surrounding the Komati Basin as a demonstration of the spirit of Ubuntu, where countries work together for mutual benefit.
Majodina also noted that the partnership between Eswatini and South Africa has spanned more than three decades and continues to evolve in response to growing industrial activity and population growth.
The revised treaty is expected to strengthen bilateral relations while improving how water resources in the basin are managed. Officials said the updated agreement will help ensure that the Komati Basin continues to support economic development, agriculture and community needs in both countries.
The milestone comes as the global community prepares to mark World Water Day, highlighting the importance of sustainable water management and international cooperation in protecting vital water resources for future generations.
