MBABANE – About 80 emaSwati citizens are currently affected by the escalating conflict in the Middle East, with tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States raising global concern.
The figure has been confirmed by a well-positioned source in the Government.
The source indicated that while the exact condition of the affected emaSwati could not immediately be disclosed, the ministry is actively monitoring the situation.
The emaSwati citizens are studying in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. These countries, although not direct battlefields, remain within a region experiencing heightened security alerts, airspace restrictions and increased military activity.
The Middle East has seen a sharp escalation in hostilities, with missile exchanges, airspace closures and heightened military deployments reported in recent days. Global leaders have called for restraint as fears grow that the conflict could widen and destabilise the region.
Air travel disruptions have affected several international routes, leaving many foreign nationals uncertain about travel plans and safety. Universities across parts of the Gulf region are reportedly reviewing contingency measures to safeguard international students.
Well-placed sources have indicated that contingency plans are underway to evacuate the affected emaSwati should the security situation deteriorate further. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is understood to be working closely with diplomatic missions and regional partners to ensure citizens’ safety.
Several countries have begun advising their citizens in the region to remain indoors, avoid non-essential travel and register with embassies. Some governments have already initiated evacuation flights for students and non-essential personnel, while others are preparing rapid response mechanisms should the conflict intensify.
While uncertainty remains, diplomatic efforts are ongoing globally to de-escalate tensions and restore stability. The emaSwati nation remains hopeful for calm and reassured that government authorities are prioritising the welfare and safety of citizens abroad.
