The Head of the Immunology Department at Ain Shams University, Ashraf Oqba, warned against the dangers of untreated lupus.
Speaking to Extra News channel, Oqba explained that lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues.
It can affect people at different ages, from childhood to adulthood.
He explained that the chronic disease’s impact is not limited to visible symptoms but can extend to vital organs such as the kidneys and heart.
Oqba pointed out that the disease does not manifest in the same way in all patients, as symptoms vary from case to case.
However, several of the prominent signs include joint inflammation, skin rashes, especially on the face, extreme fatigue, fever, and hair loss.
The Head of the Immunology Department emphasized that lupus can progress beyond these symptoms to affect internal organs, including the kidneys and heart.
This makes early detection and medical monitoring vital to reducing the risk of complications.
How is it diagnosed?
Oqba said that diagnosing lupus doesn’t rely on a single test to definitively confirm the diagnosis.
Instead, the doctor needs to consider several factors.
He explained that the diagnostic process involves a series of tests, including antibody tests, along with a clinical examination and a review of the patient’s medical history. He stressed that the doctor is responsible for making the final diagnosis after evaluating all these elements together.
Why does it affect women more often?
Regarding the causes, Oqba explained that genetic and hormonal factors play a role in the development of the disease, which explains its higher prevalence among women.
He added that certain medications and environmental factors can also contribute to triggering symptoms in susceptible individuals.

The head of the immunology department emphasized that lupus is a chronic disease and can be serious if left untreated, especially if it affects vital organs.
Conversely, he stressed that treatment and regular medical follow-up help control symptoms and reduce complications, making early intervention and continuous monitoring crucial for managing the condition.
