EGEHID assures stability of dams amid Storm Melissa

Santo Domingo.- The executive director of the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EGEHID), Rafael Salazar, assured that the country’s dams are stable and have sufficient capacity to store the rainfall expected from Tropical Storm Melissa, ruling out any risk of overflow or uncontrolled discharges.

Salazar explained that EGEHID, together with the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) and the Dam Committee (COPRE), maintains constant coordination to monitor water levels and regulate reservoir flow safely. He emphasized that all dams, except for the smaller Sabaneta and López Angostura, have ample capacity to capture more than 300 million cubic meters of water.

The official highlighted that this rainfall will help recover reservoirs affected by the drought earlier this year, ensuring stable water availability for human consumption, irrigation, and electricity generation. He also praised COPRE’s updated monitoring and response protocols, which have improved flood management and reduced downstream risks.
