Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader inaugurated the 2025 International Transport Policy Dialogue in Santo Domingo, a two-day regional meeting organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the International Transport Forum (ITF) under the theme “Transportation as a Driver of Development for Resilience and Competitiveness.” The event brings together ministers, experts, and industry leaders from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
In his opening remarks, Abinader described transportation as “the backbone of economic and social development,” stressing that investing in mobility means investing in equity, productivity, and the future. He highlighted major infrastructure projects undertaken during his administration — including the rehabilitation of highways and rural roads, modernization of the Manzanillo port, and the expansion of the interconnected Metro, Cable Car, and Monorail systems in Santo Domingo and Santiago — calling them part of the most profound transformation in Dominican mobility history.
The forum will address key challenges in the transport sector, such as sustainable financing, electric and clean mobility, AI integration, climate resilience, and road safety. Abinader thanked the IDB and ITF for their continued collaboration and urged participants to work toward a regional action pact promoting sustainable, safe, and accessible mobility. The dialogue follows the Dominican Republic’s 2024 accession as a full member of the ITF, marking an important milestone in its integration into the global sustainable development agenda.
