UWI Five Islands Campus expands to St Kitts and Nevis
The Ministry of Education has announced a significant step forward in tertiary education with the official expansion of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus to the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis.
The milestone was marked with a symbolic ceremony held at the Office of the Minister of Education, where UWI officials joined Education Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley to commemorate the occasion.
Representatives from the UWI Five Islands Campus in Antigua were present for the event, signaling the start of what both sides described as a transformative educational partnership.
Professor Justin Robinson, Principal of the UWI Five Islands Campus, emphasized the institution’s vision for regional integration and local impact.
“The Five Islands Campus has the potential to be heavily focused on providing relevant research for Eastern Caribbean governments that is targeted towards Eastern Caribbean problems. We want to bring St Kitts and Nevis fully into our universe as we seek to expand access to education but also access to OECS-relevant solutions,” said Professor Robinson.
Minister Hanley welcomed the initiative and pledged the Ministry’s support for increasing student engagement and access.
“It is indeed my privilege and honour as the minister responsible for education to lend my endorsement to the UWI Five Islands Campus. We will do our best to engage our young people and try to direct them to various universities. You will definitely see an increase in enrolment from our end,” he stated.
The move reflects UWI’s ongoing commitment to accessible, high-quality education tailored to the needs of Caribbean nations, particularly those in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
With increasing demand for programmes in fields such as climate resilience, technology, and public health, the expansion is expected to support national development goals and foster leadership across the region.
