The Department of Transport is stepping up enforcement of regulations requiring dump trucks and other vehicles transporting aggregate materials to properly cover their loads with tarpaulins.

The department reminded owners and drivers that it is legally required under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 230, to properly secure and cover all loads of sand, gravel, stones, or other debris using tarpaulins or similar coverings.

According to Regulation 126(6) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations, drivers who fail to use a tarpaulin or similar cover when transporting these materials may be fined up to $500 or imprisoned for six months, or both, if convicted in a court of summary jurisdiction.

The enforcement reminder follows an increase in public complaints about unsecured materials falling from trucks while in transit. These incidents are causing damage to other vehicles, especially windshields, and creating dangerous road conditions. Officials say the falling materials not only endanger public safety but also contribute to road litter and damage to public infrastructure.

Effective immediately, the Department of Transport will intensify enforcement operations to ensure that all aggregate and debris loads are securely covered, that no vehicle exceeds the maximum allowable gross weight, and that all drivers and operators comply with road safety laws.

The department said, “failure to properly secure loads is both unlawful and dangerous. Commercial truck operators and construction companies are urged to ensure that their drivers are fully aware of their legal responsibilities and adhere to proper safety practices.”
